That is the worst thing you could have done. It's a sure way to crack a block of warp your heads. Guess I got lucky. 8)The hissing sound you heard was caused by the overheat, not the other way around. With all the water you said came out when you removed the cap, you did not have a leak prior to the overheat. Pressure in the system caused a hose to fail, or maybe a clamp. Actually here's my theory: when I bolted those metal lines back on the rear of the engine I used the gasket-maker stuff too. I think maybe I didn't bolt them down tight enough; so on my initial test drive the gasket-maker held, but then in stop & go traffic on the way to work the engine got hotter, pressure went up, and the gasket maker started to leak. That's my theory anyway. Must tighten bolts. If your car has been sitting for a long time, it's possible the thermostat is stuck, especially if you have used any kind of water additive like Water Wetter or whatever. Those things crystallize over time and can cause all sorts of cooling system problems. The only things that should ever go into a radiator is a good coolent/antifreeze, and distilled water. I just did the 60k so it's a brand-new thermostat and all I've got in there right now is straight distilled water. Thanks for the advice, Fred!
